Vava'u National Games 30/11/09 to 4/12/09 - lahi spectacular!
Vava’u’s Puatalefusi wharf (Port of Refuge) is tagged as the most sheltered and beautiful harbour throughout the Pacific. Vava’u people are vivacious and exuberant and they always like to present things gigantically and no doubt the Vava’u National Games from November 30th to December 4th will be a chance for the athletes and sports practitioners of Vava’u Lahi to yet again display their talents and proficiency like never before.
Vava’u has produced world class athletes including Olympic Silver Medalist Paea Wolfgram from ‘Utungake and shot put thrower ‘Ana Po’uhila who has now represented Tonga at two Olympics Games and the first woman in Tonga to qualify in her event.
Weightlifting and Boxing will be displayed after the Opening ceremony on Monday as demonstration sports only. Eight other sport disciplines including Athletics, Cricket, Netball, Volleyball, Tennis, Table Tennis, Rugby 7’s, Soccer in the 5 day program for the open grade.
Five staff from TASANOC are in Vava’u to assist the running of the Games, “The most important aim of hosting the Games in Vava’u is to allow the local sport administrators of Vava’u to understand the organization of such an event and to build their competence in staging their own Games. This opportunity to host the National event in Vava’u also provides upcoming athletes with a chance to perform in a higher level from general club competition,” commented TASANOC sport development officer Hiko Fungavaka.
Five competition managers from five sports met with the organisers this morning to confirm team registrations and other logistics in preparation for next week’s grand week. “We are all very excited and the players are looking forward to the competition, 15 teams had registered and more are coming,” said Manase Tupou the competition manager for Netball
